After several days on the exhibition floor, this year’s edition revealed clear strengths while also highlighting areas FILDA must improve to reinforce its position as a leading African trade fair.

International Participation: Encouraging, Yet Uneven

One of the most encouraging developments was what appeared to be the first official participation by the United Kingdom Government if this was indeed a first, it represents an important milestone in Angola-UK commercial relations and reflects growing international confidence in Angola as an investment destination.

Foreign participation was diverse but, with one notable exception; international exhibitors were largely confined to Pavilion 3. Switzerland enjoyed a prominent position in Pavilion 1, while most other foreign participants were accommodated in Pavilion 3.

Although Pavilion 3 accommodated a good number of overseas exhibitors, its location presented challenges. Visitor access was less straightforward than the main exhibition halls, resulting in lower visitor traffic than many exhibitors would have hoped for.

In addition, exhibitors were not organised according to industry sectors. For instance, manufacturing companies stood alongside educational institutions, technology firms next to food producers, and service providers mixed with industrial suppliers. A more structured layout based on business sectors would make navigation considerably easier and create stronger networking opportunities between companies operating in related industries.

Business segmentation is standard practice at leading international trade exhibitions and would undoubtedly improve the visitor experience while increasing commercial opportunities for exhibitors.

Government Presence Sends a Positive Signal

Government participation remained one of FILDA’s strongest assets. The exhibition was officially inaugurated by the Jose de Lima Massano, Minister of State for Economic Coordination, alongside Rui Miguêns de Oliveira, Minister of Industry and Commerce and other Angola government officials while the Vice President of Angola, Esperança da Costa visited the exhibition on the second day, attracting considerable attention and reinforcing the importance of the event within Angola’s economic calendar.

Equally encouraging was the presence of several public institutions providing services directly to citizens and businesses. Organisations such as the Ministry of the Interior, including the Driving Licence Division and the Immigration and Migration Service (SME), the National Bank of Angola (BNA), the Ministry of Finance, the General Tax Administration (AGT), the Public Debt Office, and BUAP, responsible for electoral registration updates, demonstrated the Government’s commitment to bringing public services closer to the population.

Their participation transformed FILDA into more than just a commercial exhibition; it also became a practical platform where citizens could access government services while engaging with the private sector. This initiative deserves recognition and should continue in future editions.

Where Were Some of Angola’s Largest Companies?

One noticeable feature of FILDA 2026 was the absence of several major companies that make significant contributions to Angola’s GDP, which might be due to several reasons.

Firstly, participation costs appear to have increased significantly compared with 2025. Many exhibitors indicated that exhibition costs had almost doubled, making participation more difficult or even impossible to justify, particularly when combined with expenses such as stand construction, logistics, accommodation, international flights and staffing.

Secondly, industry priorities also influenced attendance. Many companies from the oil and gas sector appear to be focusing their resources on the forthcoming Angola Oil & Gas Summit, scheduled for September 2026 in Luanda.

A third factor, although based largely on discussions with exhibitors, concerns perceptions arising from FILDA 2025. Several companies felt that government ministers and senior officials visited only selected areas of the exhibition, leaving many exhibitors without the opportunity to present their investments, technologies and innovations despite the considerable resources they had committed to participate.

Whether the above perception is fully justified or not, it illustrates the importance of ensuring that government officials engage with the widest possible range of exhibitors. Recognition matters. Businesses invest substantial amounts to participate in FILDA, and meaningful interaction with policymakers provides reassurance that their investment is valued.

Huíla Deserved Centre Stage

Choosing Huíla Province as the official mascot of FILDA 2026 was an excellent decision. Huíla possesses enormous agricultural capacity, rich mineral resources, expanding tourism opportunities and significant industrial potential. It perfectly reflects Angola’s ambitions for economic diversification. However, its location within Pavilion 2, surrounded largely by vehicle exhibitors, limited the impact that its designation as the featured province could have achieved.

A province selected as FILDA’s mascot deserves either a prime location in Pavilion 1 or its own dedicated pavilion where visitors can fully experience its investment opportunities, tourism attractions, cultural heritage and economic strengths. Giving greater prominence to the featured province would reinforce the purpose behind selecting an annual mascot and create a stronger focal point for visitors.

Digital Marketing Yes – Distraction No

Modern exhibitions naturally rely on digital communication. Professional marketing teams, photographers, videographers and media organisations play an essential role in extending FILDA’s reach far beyond the exhibition halls. However, there is an important distinction between professional event coverage and the growing presence of digital influencers.

While influencers generate online visibility, their presence can sometimes distract attention from FILDA’s primary purpose: creating business opportunities, promoting innovation and facilitating commercial partnerships. Crowds gathering around personalities rather than exhibitors can reduce meaningful engagement between buyers and businesses. FILDA should remain first and foremost a business exhibition. Digital marketing is undoubtedly welcome; influencer-driven entertainment should not overshadow the event’s commercial objectives.

Recognition Should Extend Beyond Awards

Recognition is a powerful incentive for exhibitors. The Gala Dinner held on 25^th July 2026, during which awards for outstanding exhibition stands were presented, remains one of FILDA’s highlights. However, many exhibitors questioned the criteria used for invitations to the Gala. Considering that every exhibitor competes for stand awards and invests considerable time, creativity and financial resources in presenting their businesses professionally, broader participation would create a greater sense of inclusion and appreciation. Recognition should not only be reflected through trophies but also through opportunities for exhibitors to participate in the event celebrating their achievements.

Looking Ahead: Making FILDA Even Better

FILDA has firmly established itself as Angola’s leading international trade exhibition. Yet, like every successful event, continuous improvement is essential.

Several practical changes could significantly enhance future editions:

• Organising exhibitors by industry sectors to improve visitor navigation and encourage business networking.
• Ensuring government ministers/senior officials and VIP delegations visit all exhibition halls, engaging with exhibitors across every sector.
• Giving greater prominence to the featured province by providing a dedicated pavilion or a prime location.
• Improving accessibility and visibility for international exhibitors rather than concentrating them in less accessible areas.
• Making overseas and provincial exhibitors feel genuinely welcome through improved hospitality and exhibitor support.
• Encouraging greater attendance by business professionals, investors and procurement decision-makers to maximise commercial outcomes.
• Reviewing participation costs to ensure FILDA remains attractive to both returning and new exhibitors.
• Creating a more inclusive approach to recognition events, including the Gala Dinner.
